As soon as I watched one of his videos, I knew he was the real deal.
The logic, the rationality, the fortitude to say the unpopular. He was good, really good and you could tell he knew what he was talking about.
Crypto Investor (his channel and moniker) comes from a finance background and already taught fundamental analysis and value investing online but took his talents to the crypto world in the second half of 2017.
You can see the shift on his Seeking Alpha page.
The move to cryptocurrency analysis proved fortuitous as the crypto markets went wild – drawing global attention a few months later and his YouTube channel was aged and in prime position to deliver his high value analysis.
Despite only joining on August 28, 2017, Crypto Investor’s channel has put up monstrous numbers:
147,941 subscribers and 6,549,158 views
Here’s one of his more popular videos (The #1 Mistake Beginners Make Investing in Crypto) with over 229,000 views:
With YouTube serving as the breeding ground of information and advice during the crypto craze, Crypto Investor’s calm and steady voice was a much needed one.
From November to Christmas, all cryptocurrency did was go up in price. It made anybody who posted forecast videos look like a genius.
And, of course, with fast money to be made, all sorts of “crypto experts” began posting their “moonshots” and coins to buy.
There was even one steroid guy who was sitting in his garage giving his predictions. Sadly I can’t find the video but it was classic.
Going Where the Money is
Whoever he is (I don’t think he’s posted his real name), clearly he made the right move to transition from traditional investing. His YouTube channel is worth 6-figures and will eclipse 7-figures as monetization becomes easier.
He’s also got a hefty Twitter following at 15.4k but I’m thinking most of those are already YouTube subscribers.
His Steemit account is also a nice income producer with his last 10 blog posts earning an average of $83.62 each.
He’s also earning a little bit through Amazon’s affiliate program by linking to his preferred cold storage wallets: Ledger Nano S, Ledger Blue, and Trezor as well as his recommended reading for cryptocurrencies: Cryptoassets.
Crypto Investor’s immense success has been a result of leveraging YouTube to showcase his knowledge/intelligence at exactly the right time.
Don’t get me wrong, the guy’s clearly a winner and he naturally has a great, straightforward presentation style that plays well but his timing worked out perfectly to hyper accelerate his staggering growth.
But he is lacking in the marketing department:
First, where is his website?
I like that he’s leveraging these other platforms but it’s important to get your own home base to refer people to.
Here’s exactly how you do it:
Instead of saying go to my Steemit, my Seeking Alpha, my Twitter, etc. you just send everyone to one short and simple address: Your .com.
That way if anything changes – you can update it through your website. You want to funnel people through your platform first before they ever touch the other platforms that you’re leveraging.
Use social media, don’t let it use you.
Accounts get banned, terms of service change, etc. so you always want to make sure you’re in control.
Secondly, get those email subscribers!
150,000 YouTube subscribers is great but 50,000 email subscribers are worth way more because you’re in control! You can never have that email list wrested from your grip and you can always contact them directly.
CI is a legit, honest guy so he may not want to even sell via email but he should still capture emails as a way to tap the user base.
It’s not like it’s a bad thing. I’d love to get his emails.
Third, create brand uniformity.
On Seeking Alpha, he’s Truth Investor.
On Steemit, he’s @cryptovestor.
His YouTube URL is https://www.youtube.com/cryptoinvestor.
It still works because he’s so good people seek him out but it’s definitely suboptimal.
Last thing I’m going to critique is his new cartoonish video covers.
They’re really well done but I think his old graphics actually look better and less circus-like.
The attention grabbing covers for crypto channels has been played out to the max and beyond that I don’t think the new graphics match the cool, steady nature of his channel.
The marketing imperfections don’t really matter when you take the broad view because Crypto Investor overcomes it all with intrinsic value. If anything, this is a classic case of just take action and do something; don’t try to be perfect because you don’t have to be to be successful.
If CI hesitates and procrastinates for three months, he’s not even close to where he is today.
Cryptocurrency is here to stay. We’ll see it boom again but all the while Crypto Investor is going to be churning out high quality content and steadily growing his already massive userbase.
What’s cool is you can tell this is what he likes to do and now he’s going to make a lot of money doing it.
